Do you ever feel left out of the loop when talking to your video production agency? Are agencies trying to throw you off when they use big fancy technical terms? Fear no more! Below is a list of ‘must know’ phrases to keep up with production companies, and efficiently communicate exactly what you want out of your corporate video.
- Style Frames: Style of animation so the client can get a sense of the final product from initial conversations.
- Pre Vis: Preliminary visuals or graphics to define a style with a client to establish a style before work begins.
- Treatment: A document, usually in keynote, that outlines what we understand of the company and their objectives highlighting opportunities where we can work together well. Includes past work of Sunday Treat, Rate Card and About the company.
- Storyboard: A graphic representation of how your video will unfold, shot by shot. It's made up of a number of squares with illustrations or pictures representing each shot, with notes about what's going on in the scene and what's being said in the script during that shot.
- B-Roll: B-roll is a term used to describe secondary footage, often used as cutaway footage, to provide context and visual interest to help tell your story.
- Jump Cut: An abrupt transition from one scene to another.
- Lower Third: The lower third identification graphic, better known as just the lower third, is an area of the screen that is commonly used to display contextual information, such as a person's name, a location, or some other pertinent information.
- Shot List: A document that maps out everything that will happen in a scene of a video, by describing each shot within that film or video. It serves as a kind of checklist, providing the project with a sense of direction and preparedness for the film crew.
- Aspect Ratio: Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width and the height of a four-sided shape like a TV screen or a photograph. Like any mathematical ratio, the aspect ratio of a rectangle doesn’t refer to its physical dimensions, but rather, how the width and length of an object relate to one another.
- Recce: Before a shoot, our producer will usually scope out the venue, identifying any potential health and safety hazards or issues that may come up on the day.
- Match Cuts: An technique where the composition of each shot is the same but shows a different subject in each frame.
- Transitions: Creative and innovative ways to transition from one shot to the other using motion graphics, camera movement or post production techniques such as lens flares and light leaks.
- Rough Cut: Usually the first draft of an edit without the bells and whistles.
- Panning: When you move your camera horizontally; either left to right or right to left, while its base is fixated on a certain point.
